Already?!
I try not to panic as Noor leads me inside the interior of the palace. I’m too nervous to notice my surroundings, and I’m reminded of following Zair at the auction. Noor comes to a stop before a lovely dark and polished wooden door. She knocks, and Daris opens it to welcome me inside. Noor bids both of us good-bye, and I’m once again alone with the helpful man. I take a moment to thank him for all he has done. He considers me for a second, as if he wishes to say something, but only gives me a small smile instead.
I know he knows something is amiss with me.
He heard it when I forgot to age my voice and spoke English, but he doesn’t seem inclined to rat me out. In fact, I would venture to say he trusts me well enough, if allowing me into the palace and meeting with the kings is any indication. Hopefully, his kindness will not come back to bite me in the ass. I look around the room and try not to ponder the irony that another person wants me to teach English. At least this person isn’t subjecting me to perverse sexual acts afterwards.
I shiver in remembrance.
“Almubaraka, is everything alright?” Daris asks in concern, seeing me shudder.
I struggle to answer him, my mind a jumble between English and Arabic, and I just nod instead. I look around the room to distract both him and me, and I see I’m in a resplendent receiving room. Four plush chairs circle a low table in the center of the room, and along the walls are low couches and decorative pillows. My feet sink into the soft rugs, and I’m struck by the sheer wealth of the room. Zair and Suleiman were very rich and by extension, so was Nayyir, but not in the quietly lavish manner I am seeing now.
The walls have fantastic desert murals on them and the attention to detail is mind-blowing. I know I could visit this room often, and always find something new to see in them. I’m staring at the paintings intently, when another door on the opposite side of the room opens, and in strides a distinguished-looking older gentleman. Daris stands, and I quickly follow suit. The newcomer nods and opens the door wider to admit. . .
A desert deity.
Tall, dark, and so handsome I’m convinced he’s not real.
“Thank you, Moufid. Please send in Raqib as soon as possible, and see to the merchants waiting in the Eastern District for their recompense.”
His voice is deep and stirs me inside in a way that is disturbing. After all I have gone through, I should not be experiencing this. . .
What?
Unbridled lust?
I tamp down my thoughts and emotions and regard the gorgeous man as dispassionately as possible. I have no business looking at him in this manner. Besides, he’s married to another man; how unseemly can I get? I’m glad my burqa covers me completely; my face has always been an open book to my inner thoughts.
